HTC Desire OTA update rolling out in South Africa – MTN network
UPDATE: Do not apply these updates if you are running non-stock HTC software ROM’s, even those that are based on stock HTC ROMs. Rather get an updated ROM from the group/person that made your ROM that include these updates. There is a real posibility that you might brick your phone if you apply these to non-stock ROM’s.
I have just noticed that there is a HTC Desire System Update rolling out in South Africa. Even though I run a rooted upgraded ROM (version 2.2), based on the official HTC ROM, I was also given the OTA download. So I am not sure whether this System update will take you from 2.1 to 2.2.
The version number is given as 2.29.405.2 and it is a 28.87MB update so I suggest you do it over a WIFI connection if you do not want to incur any mobile data costs. My build number before the update was 2.10.405.2.
You can check for the update from the Home Screen pressing MENU button then Settings / About Phone / System software updates / Check now.
I can only check on the MTN Network so am not sure whether it is available on any of the other mobile networks.
I am on MTN and still waiting for the update to 2.2 almost given up! Tried via the “System Software Updates” last night but still nothing. Other options?
Hi there.
I received the OTA upgrade notification from 2.1 to 2.2 this morning. (you can see my other exited post somewhere here on your site http://www.mariusb.net/blog/2010/08/update-on-froyo-android-2-2-availability-for-htc-desire-in-south-africa/)
This was the 97MB official update. Took about 15mins on wi-fi at the office. (don’t tell my boss lol 🙂
I only then saw your new post here and promptly checked my phone. I had build 2.10.405.2
So i went to system software updates and manually checked for an update. And lo and behold, there is the new 2.29.405.2 update.
So I guess what I’m trying to say is no, this 2.29 update does not take you from 2.1 to 2.2.
I’m just checking what the changes were made before I update though. have not gone to 2.29 yet.
should do so later this afternoon.
Harry, yes 2.29.405.2 is a small update for 2.2 and I will get another update (2.29.405.5) after you apply the 2.29.405.2.
For people that do not run the stock standard HTC software should not apply these updates. Rather get an updated ROM which includes these updates. Applying these OTA updates to your rooted not stock ROM might brick your phone so beware.
Hi, thanks yes.
Curiosity got the better of me so I’m busy running the second update. And then the third one. feels like Christmas. 😛
Any ideas what / who sparked the all of a sudden updates? We been complaining about Leaf, and MTN and Vodacom and Google and HTC and just about every body , and now we get all the updates in one day.
Is this a country wide roll out or also linked to iemi numbers?
Harry, as far as I know there was some agreement between HTC/LEAF and MTN to rollout updates on the MTN Network. They are starting with the Desire and then move on to the Wildfire and other HTC phones.
I have no idea what is happening on the other mobile networks.
Hi guys – glad to hear there is finally movement on this from MTN/LEAF/HTC, I am still getting “There are no updates available for your phone”?
My firmware is 2.1 update 1
Hi guys. I also get “no update available” on the HTC desire hd using MTN. Anyone have any ideas?
If you want the OTA update the you will have to be patient .. am assuming you have a HTC Desire since that is the only ones that is rolling out at the moment. Wildfire and other phones will be later.
I recently updated my Desire @ MTN Canal walk to 2.2 and last week I got the OTA update but when I update it shows updating then the phone comes on and I still get the OTA message when I check the software number it is still 1.09.405.8
I tried again my fone goes off and show the update thingy then comes on again and still not updated what should I do

Marius,
In one of your earlier posts you described your upgrade to the rooted Froyo ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997). Is it safe to apply these OTA updates with that ROM?
Thanks!
Nick, No do not apply the OTA update to your rooted ROM. At the link you supplied is a new ROM with the latest updates in.
Based on Enos’ comment is it worth going to MTNSp Dbn Pavilion do you think and asking then if they have the update to froyo? Is it an MAN or Leaf issue the delay?
Mtn not man – predictive text’s awesome on the desire but can get you into trouble…
Gareth, I would say that there is no harm in trying.
Well I tried CyanogenMod but it wouldn’t pick up my sim-card… So I’ve installed the v3.1 (2.29.405.5 with INIT.D) ROM and looks fine.
Got OTA update today for my HTC Desire on Vodacom (finally)
If you have a rooted phone, you can unroot it using an RUU. See http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desire-desire-modaco-com/307683/howto-unroot-your-htc-desire/
It will downgrade your phone and it WILL wipe your data. Once that is done, you can safely install the OTA.
